Overcoming false starts and attempts to get off of the ground, Jaime "Blue Beetle" Reyes has secured his cinematic debut as a director has been locked into the project.
Though the character was featured in an episode of Smallville (2001-2011) that was primarily about Michael "Booster Gold" Carter, as the two characters are commonly seen together, Reyes has secured his spotlight. Rumors that have circulated around the Blue Beetle project have mentioned Booster Gold as well, though there's no confirmation in whether the companion will enter the DC Extended Universe through Blue Beetle.
The Wrap breaks the news, reporting that Angel Manuel Soto will direct the project. This will be Warner Bros. and DC's first Latino superhero movie, and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has been signed on to pen the script. “It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC,” Soto said to The Wrap. “I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”
Reyes, a Mexican-American teenager, is the third individual to don the Blue Beetle mantle. He was created in 2006 and was properly introduced during the year's "Infinite Crisis" event. The film will be backed by a primarily Latino crew, ComicBook.com said, and that is the first superhero movie to do so.
The Wrap suggests that the film is considering late 2021 to start their production and Warner Bros. nor DC have not announced any formal casting or theatrical premiere dates.
