The Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian's debut comic, Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter, has been renewed for another run at Dark Horse Comics, and we couldn't be happier.
We first heard of this horror/comedy genre comic at Mainframe Comic Con when host Perri Nemiroff sat down with David Dastmalchian and the entire creative team to discuss the first volume of the comic series.
We then got to witness an extremely fun Virtual Count Crowley Cosplay Contest at Mainframe 2.0 with celebrity judge, Lloyd Kaufman from Troma Entertainment.
The comic, Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter, is a humorous comic set in the genre world of cable tv horror hosting, something near and dear to Mr. Dastmalchian.
If you're a fan of horror-host shows like Svengoolie and Elvira, Count Crowley is for you.
The story is about aspiring reporter, Jerri Bartman, who is furious when she's demoted to hosting the nightly Creature Feature at her small-town TV station.
But Jerri quickly learns that there is more to horror hosting than just introducing bad B-movies. Her first night in the costume of her missing predecessor, Count Crowley, finds her face to face with a living, breathing . . . werewolf. Or was she just that drunk?
The art in the first volume is by acclaimed artist, Lukas Ketner.
When asked about the new run of the comic, Dastmalchian had this to say:
“There were a lot of new elements we didn’t get to play with before with Vol. 1, including locations, certain kinds of monsters,” he said. “The way that monsters interact with each other as well as humans.”
“I have so many dreams for Jerri and where I’d love to dive into both her internal battles, professional revolution and ultimate fate as an ‘appointed’ monster hunter. If this is the end of the haunted road then I can proudly state that it’s the greatest accomplishment I’ve yet to achieve as a storyteller.”
No word on when Count Crowley Vol. 2 will hit shelves, but the news was made official in a tweet from Dark Horse Comics.
So, definitely tell your local comic shop to place a large order for Count Crowley Vol. 2 and add it to your pull lists.
And to get caught up on the first volume of Count Crowley, it is available in trade paperback from Dark Horse Comics. https://www.darkhorse.com/Books/3004-857/Count-Crowley-Reluctant-Midnight-Monster-Hunter-TPB
