Mysterio Easter Eggs Spotted on 'Spider-Man 3' Set

Sharp-eyed fans have picked up on some familiar references hidden away in plain sight on the Spider-Man 3 set that could hint at the latest foe's return.

Images surfaced both across social media, sparking more rumors to circulate around the elusive, unnamed Spider-Man 3. Under the weight of a downpour of constant gossip, it's difficult to pull truths from fanbase hopes for the upcoming Spider-Man threequel. Twitter and Instagram account @atlanta_filming sparked a new conversation revolving around the possible return of Quentin "Mysterio" Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal).

Beck made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), using his skills of deceit and illusion to manipulate Peter "Spider-Man" Parker (Tom Holland) while away in Europe on a class trip, leaving Parker to navigate realties from falsehoods both as Spider-Man and as himself.

Images from the Spider-Man set include a newsstand displaying a poster that reads "I Believe" with a printed graphic of the villain's iconic fishbowl helmet. Another paper reads "Citizens to Defend Spidey." Far From Home closes on the cliffhanger of Beck publically framing Parker for murder, but not before betraying his identity. Beck's "death" is still up for debate and sets up the Wall-Crawler to be on the run.

Director Jon Watts and producer Eric Carroll tap into the odd of Beck's return and their responses spill gasoline on the freshly-ignited flames. “We wanted to find our ‘in’ and similar to what we did with Mordo in Doctor Strange,” Carroll said. “We wanted to give them time to have relationships so when and if we get to do something different with Mysterio, it really feels like a betrayal... and we’re hopefully setting the stage for something really spectacular and that feels really Spider-Man, which is, again, if we get to do something else with this character, then they’ve already got this really personal relationship.”

Watts added that “if the movie keeps asking this question of ‘Who’s going to be the next Iron Man?’ and Spider-Man is finally shaking that legacy and starting to finally chart his own path and step up in his own way, I thought it would be really ironic to rob him of that opportunity to reveal himself of the world,” Watts said. “In this movie that’s all about exploring truth and self-deception, it felt like an interesting ironic twist for Mysterio to essentially win by making Peter’s biggest secret public knowledge.”

Mysterio's reappearance remains to be a mystery yet, and though there's no confirmation one way nor another, Spider-Man 3 swings onto screens on December 17, 2021.
