Sugar, spice, and everything nice? Not in the eyes of The CW. The Powerpuff Girls may be returning on-screen in a live-action series but will change drastically since we've seen them last on Cartoon Network.
The updated version will cast the Powerpuff Girls into their twentysomethings, setting up the trio to be jaded, cynical heroines mourning the loss of their childhood due to crimefighting. Compared to the original cartoon that ran from 1998 to 2005, sending the elementary-aged team of Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup on zany missions, The CW aims to reboot the show as a more "adult" themed franchise, following the lead of Riverdale, a hardcore take on the tame Archie Comics.
The Powerpuff Girls will predictably be grittier, and more coarse around the edges as the triad is asked to leave their retirement and save the world again.
Juno creator Diablo Cody will take the reins as he will write and produce the show alongside Heather Reigner. It is unclear how far this new series has been developed.
