RUMOR: Chris Evans to Play Multiple Characters in 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness'

The Sorcerer Supreme is faced with the longest gap between two solo movies as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness holds onto its 2022 release, five years after Doctor Strange challenge what reality could be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The wait time is already proving itself to be worthwhile as the cast grows, and a Marvel veteran might make their return sooner than fans thought.

Pushed back due to the reshuffling of the MCU slate, director Sam Raimi's return to Marvel includes a fascinating premise teeming with characters both old and new, tying into both WandaVision (2021-) and the still-untitled Spider-Man 3 (2021). A more ominous tone will take hold of the MCU, and with its evermore curious Phase 4, it has been rumored that Chris Evans will take on two roles in the Doctor Strange sequel.

The news hails from Giant Freakin Robot, who defends their reporting on the rumor with two past claims that they contend to be true. They insist that their sources were relied on to note Don Cheadles' involvement in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021-), as well as a more bold claim of Josh Brolin returning as the Mad Titan Thanos. Thanos co-creator Jim Starlin spoke on the rumor, seeming to confirm it through ComicBook's podcast Phase Zero.

According to the rumor, Marvel is hoping that Evans will return to the role of Captain America with a twist, where he will embrace a HYDRA counterpart of the character. The website tacks on that the studio is looking to take the actor back to his Marvel roots: casting him as Johnny "the Human Torch" Storm from his Fantastic Four (2005) days. It's to be noted that the same outlet reported that Marvel wants Jessica Alba to also revisit her early 2000s Fantastic Four role in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie.

Although neither Marvel nor Chris Evans has addressed the rumors that have been set alight, it seems that the comic book movie studio has plenty of surprises on the way. Whether Evans' roles are to actually hit big screens or be another rumor and only a rumor, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will premiere on March 25, 2022.
