Sony Animation: COVID-19 Means More More PG-13 and R-Rated Animation

Despite the struggle of the entertainment industry during the Coronavirus lockdown, there is still firm stubbornness and bold determination for perseverance in the animation industry.

Sony Animation's president Kristine Belson had been sure to speak up about the future of the animation field, especially with Sony's own craft when moving forward. Per her prediction, Belson said "I don’t think you’re going to see more family animated movies because that’s very saturated. There will be more R-rated animated movies. There are a couple we’re working on and we’re really excited about releasing our first one. I think you’re going to see PG-13 animated movies, which is something you haven’t seen before. Harder action-adventure sort of stuff."

Belson didn't mention any specific examples of Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) and their all-too-soon more intense animated films, but it is known that the director of the mild and family-friendly Hotel Transylvania will be behind Fixed - an R-rated comedy.

Dipping their toe into more a more mature direction with the 2018 Spider-Man team-up film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the gorgeously animated and heartfelt Marvel-based flick snagged an Oscar of its own.

Belson will retain her seat as SPA president moving forward and has expanded her reach from the screen to the small screen as she aims to work with streaming services and television programming. "I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to do things that no other theatrical animation studio in Hollywood is doing," Belson said about the newfound opportunity to expand.

If SPA sticks to their claim that they can confidently move forward with adult animation, they'll be the first studio to break the genre into the big screen. Even on a smaller measure, both streaming and television are thriving from more mature content, and SPA could hit their jackpot.
