Marvel is preparing for a major cinematic comeback as their latest entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, WandaVision, is to release in a little over a week away. This series will not only provide insight into what has happened to Earth's Mightiest Heroes due to the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), as well as opening the door for Marvel's next plot arc through film and television.
WandaVision may be the one to shake up the universe that has already been established, but not without the help of the characters that will come into play. One character in particular, Monica Rambeau, will shed her current standing as a side character, and transition into more of a major component of the series. Rambeau was the first to enrobe as Captain Marvel in the comics as an Avenger but has taken on other alter egos such as "Photon" and "Pulsar" in the past.
Cinematically, there wasn't much direction laid out for Rambeau outside of her companionship with Carol "Captain Marvel" Danvers (Brie Larson) in Captain Marvel (2019). "[Rambeau's] inclusion in the series was a discovery, and not quite mapped out, but it's really enriched the show," WandaVision's co-executive Mary Livanos said to SFX Magazine.
The abstruseness of Rambeau has the likeliness of becoming a concrete part of the WandaVision plot, furthering actress Tenoyah Parris' involvement with Marvel Studios as it embraces its new wave of comic book adaptations.
“This has been a childhood dream. To be a Marvel superhero. I can even remember, I’ve always said that ‘I want to be a superhero," Parris said in an interview with ESPN's The Undefeated, "then when the MCU opened up, I think I was in college. It was like I want to be a Marvel superhero,” she revealed. “I went to see Iron Man and seeing women in those movies kick ass. I watched those movies and said, ‘I want to do that.’”
While there isn't a clear-cut vision for Rambeau in the MCU yet, she is still a powerful Avenger and a powerful ally to characters that she may cross paths with in the future. Parris has already secured her spot in Captain Marvel 2 (2022).
“I didn’t know how or why because Black women are not afforded that opportunity. Most of the women I was watching weren’t Black. I was like sure, whatever that’s not going to happen. And then it happened. When I tell you that it wasn’t on my radar at that moment…I’m so happy to be a part of this universe. And to be Monica Rambeau, she’s such a badass in the comics. I just can’t believe that this is happening. This is a full-on action movie, mixed with sitcoms, it’s wild. It’s wild. I think people will be very excited," Parris added during her time with ESPN's The Undefeated. WandaVision will premier on January 15, only on Disney+.
